Science Fiction Movies/Television I Haven't Seen and Should
I'm gonna preface this post by saying the audiobook of Ready Player One is absolutely the best audiobook I've ever listened to. (This doesn't count full cast radio dramas, of which Narnia and Redwall definitely top the list.) Wil Wheaton reads it and he's an incredible narrator. I was legit up until 4 am last night listening to it and playing Age of Empires because I completely lost track of time. And had coffee with dinner but we aren't counting that. So anyway. Even if you've read the book already, I would recommend giving the audio a try. And once I finish listening to it, which will be tonight or tomorrow, I'm excited to watch the movie, even though I know they're very different from each other.
Now, speaking of movies, I decided to take this summer and watch a bunch of science fiction (and some fantasy too) movies and tv shows I really should have seen at this point in my life. I watched Alien and Blade Runner for the first time a couple months ago and I'm just disgusted with myself for not watching those sooner. I have yet to work my way through the rest of the Alien franchise, but I'm excited. I really loved the original. Blade Runner is one of the best films I've ever seen and I'm waiting to get the special set from the library with all the different cuts so I can watch all of them. Plus Blade Runner 2049 was just stunning. Stunning. I didn't really care for Ryan Gosling before I watched that and really he's a phenomenal actor.
I also watched Logan's Run, which I also absolutely adored. The special effects were cheesy as hell, and so were the costumes (can you say hello 1970s??), but I loved the story. One of my things for this whole project is noting how science fiction changed onscreen after Star Wars was released. 1977 is like my BC/AD, haha. A few weeks ago I actually watched a movie called Battle Beyond the Stars from 1980 that was way better than I anticipated. It came up in my suggested Amazon Prime stuff and I thought sure, why not and it was this really big scale film and it had a sassy onboard computer and was scored by James Horner and well I loved it.
So now today I began watching the original Battlestar Galactica tv series and I'm maybe a little in love. It's so good. I have too many things to do but I just wanted to keep watching. I can't wait to get to the later series too. And Stargate. And Farscape. And Babylon 5. And the rest of the Star Trek series because I've only ever watched The Next Generation in its entirety.
By the way, a great recent science fiction film is Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. It's probably one of the most beautiful films you'll ever see (yeah, I think it tops Avatar), and it's funny and the opening sequence is worth it even if you don't care for the rest of it.
I'm a science fiction junkie and you know what? I'm proud of that. It's good stuff. I think humanity needs science fiction. Got any recommendations for me? Books, movies, shows, etc, give them to me! If I haven't seen/read it, I'll add it to my list!
